The Hammond family is at the heart of C & D South West. Indeed the initials of the company name, now synonymous with quality across the South West come courtesy of current MD Darren and his dad Charles. In 1999 the father-and son team from South Yorkshire bought up an ailing logistics business Chard and Axminster Transport based in Chard and set about transforming it into one of the West Country’s leading transport and distribution firms.
Much has changed within the transport industry since those early days. But under Darren’s stewardship, following the values passed down by his own father has remained at the core of C&D South West’s business ethos. In more recent years, the next generation of the Hammond family is at the forefront of ensuring the company’s continued success.
Daughter Lorna is currently working in Human Resources and is almost complete in her 3 year management development plan, coupled with aBusiness & Management Degree that she has graduated with a Distinction.
Her twin sister Cayla is also making firm footsteps in C&D in the Finance department, she is currently undertaking an AAT qualification to gauge a further understanding of the finance and accounting aspects of the business. Brother Sam is making way up the operational and warehousing ladder, joining the company last year he has shown exceptional operational and planning skills for managing drivers and the delivery and collection of freight.
Darren has always been a firm believer in starting from the bottom and working up through the business and has instilled this value into all his children. Working alongside his wife and mother to the children is Amanda Hammond who is the company’s credit controller ensuring the businesses revenue streams are secure.
Total Customer Service is the pinnacle of the C&D service offering. In an industry that demands 24/7 communication between depots, drivers and clients, for a company whose maxim is “The customer is king”, communication is vital.
To ensure the Customer has the best possible service C&D operate extended Customer support functions between 07:30 and 20:30 daily unprecedented providing customers with person-to-person, updated information about the status of their deliveries. As testimony to this service C&D South West have been awarded the coveted Sales and Marketing Award at the Palletforce Gala Awards ceremony and the European Sales Export for 2017, showing further expansion.
Being an established family owned and run company, the family ethos and ethics run through all aspects of the business which gives C&D the competitive edge on other hauliers in the south west region. Carl Wylde, Commercial manager backs this up and quotes “we are big enough to succeed but small enough to care, having the personal touch to our clients is what really makes us stand out amongst our competitors”.
The business has improved to meet category requirements substantially over the last few years as now all 5 of the Hammond Family are working within the business, 2017 is also a milestone year for the company as it has been 30 years since C & D have been operating in transport.
With controlled and sustained growth, 2017 has seen the highest number of trading accounts and highest turnover in all the years that C & D have been in business. With the dual-site expansion of the Blandford Forum depot in 2014, C & D have no plans to stop anytime soon.
Although C&D South West operates throughout the UK and Europe the vast majority of its customers are situated within a 20 mile radius of Chard. Maintaining a strong working relationship goes hand-in-hand with ensuring first class service. C & D South West brings a global Logistical solution to the business fraternity of the South West Peninsula, whilst remembering our roots and family ethos, is the key to the C & D success.
