Yeovil Apprenticeship Fair 2019

Here at C & D South West, we continually are looking for new ways to develop existing staff and bring new faces into the Transport Industry.

As part of this and getting the word out there, we have now taken part in the Yeovil College Apprenticeship fair for 2 years running to encourage and promote our in house Driver Academy Training scheme and apprenticeships!

The event took place on the 5th March at Yeovil College and it was a very successful event with many local employers, students and individuals attending the night. It was lovely to see so many faces! Our stand was full with information for everybody to take away and have a chat with us regarding apprenticeships and career opportunities at C & D South West!

Below are some of the frequent questions we get asked at the events, so we have compiled some answers to ensure you have as much information as possible regarding the apprenticeships we offer here at C & D!

But why an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes which allow you to complete on-the-job training and gain relevant, nationally recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships are designed by the Sector Skills Councils and course content is influenced by relevant business representatives. In this way, Apprenticeships are created by people who genuinely understand business, ensuring that you learn the skills that employers need.

This makes apprenticeships different from other forms of training because while students completing other courses will do most of their learning in the classroom, Apprenticeships are work-based. As employees, apprentices earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skills. Off the job, usually on a day-release basis, apprentices receive training to work towards nationally recognised qualifications.

Is there any age restrictions?

There is no age restrictions! We get asked this a lot at the local apprenticeship fairs and please be assured that Apprenticeships are open to all age groups above 16 years old. You must be living in England and not in full-time education already. An Apprenticeship could be for you if you are just leaving school, seeking to start a new career or are moving into a new role with your existing employer that requires new skills.

What Apprenticeships are on offer at C&D?

Our main apprenticeships here at C & D South West are focused around the Large Goods Vehicle Driver Apprenticeship (Level 2) and this can be for Category C or C+E. However Working with Transplant Mastertrain in Exeter who provides the training for the apprenticeships, there are also apprenticeships available for Warehouse and office positions too!

What does the LGV Driver Apprenticeship include?

During the Apprenticeship, Transplant work with us to develop training specific to their job role, as well as becoming an LGV driver. You will be taught the fundamental aspects of being an operator within the logistics sector, as well as the vocational licenses. Most of this training is carried out here at C & D. Approximately Transplant will visit at least every 10 weeks to review progress and micro teaching sessions, as well as online learning via or online training platforms. There will also be Master Classes provided at the Transplant training centre teaching aspects such as Drivers Hours, Load Security, Driver Responsibilities, Route Planning and many other relative subject areas.

What will I get paid during my apprenticeship?

We pay very competitively in comparison to most apprenticeship wages as we want to ensure the wage is in no way a deterrent to coming into the Transport & Logistics industry and sometimes holds people back from enrolling in apprenticeships and developing their skills.
